दुर्योधन approached आचार्य द्रोण. King दुर्योधन said :-

पश्यैतां पाण्डुपुत्राणामाचार्य महतीं चमूम् I
व्यूढां द्रुपदपुत्रेण तव शिष्येण धीमता II३II
“Behold master, the mighty army of the sons of Pandu arrayed for battle by your talented pupil धृष्टद्युम्न, the son of द्रुपद.”

It appears that King दुर्योधन uttered these words during normal conversation. But was it so? Let’s peep in the past to explore the truth. पृषत, the king of पांचाल kingdom and sage भरद्वाज were good friends. द्रुपद was son of the King. He was staying in भरद्वाज-आश्रम with द्रोणाचार्य for studies. They became good friends. Once द्रुपद said to द्रोणाचार्य,”When I become King, you should stay with me. My kingdom, property and all luxuries are equally yours.” King पृषत expired and द्रुपद was coronated as the King of पांचाल. द्रोणाचार्य engrossed himself in meditation living in the आश्रम of his father. Later on he got married to कृपी, who was the sister of कृपाचार्य. He had a son named अश्वत्थामा. One day अश्वत्थामा saw other boys drinking milk. He too asked for milk and started crying. द्रोणाचार्य couldn’t provide milk to him because he didn’t have a cow. He mixed flour in the water and pretending it as milk, fed this mixture to his son.
द्रोणाचार्य heard that his buddy द्रुपद became King. Thinking of their friendship, he was very glad and visited the King. But King द्रुपद didn’t pay him due respect and said,”How can a King and a poor be friends?” These humiliating words of द्रुपद broke the heart of द्रोणाचार्य and he felt deeply insulted. He returned from palace and went to his brother in law कृपाचार्य at हस्तिनापुर.
One day पाण्डव and कौरव princes were playing with ball. Incidentally the ball fell into a deep well. The princes tried hard to take the ball out of the well but failed. द्रोणाचार्य was observing this. He said,” Boys! I will take the ball out. Till then you arrange my lunch.” द्रोणाचार्य put a straw on his bow and took the ball out of well. The boys got astonished. They ran to the palace and told the incident to भीष्म. भीष्म at once understood that the man was none other than द्रोणाचार्य. भीष्म honored him in the palace of हस्तिनापुर and appointed him as a teacher to teach the princes of कौरव and पांडव.
When the education of princes completed, द्रोणाचार्य asked them to capture the King of पांचाल and present before him as Gurudakshina. Kaurav princes tried to capture द्रुपद but could not succeed. Pandavas defeated King द्रुपद with the extra ordinary valor of Arjuna and tied him with ropes. They offered the prisoner Drupada to द्रोणाचार्य. द्रोणाचार्य snatched half of his kingdom and released him.
द्रुपद got infuriated by such humiliation. He started a Holy यज्ञ along with his wife with the motive to terminate द्रोणाचार्य. In महाभारत this incident is narrated in 63rd उपपर्व of आदिपर्व :-

In this verse it is told that at that time अश्वत्थामा was born to द्रोणाचार्य. A very strong man, illuminated as fire, emerged out of the flames of that Holy Alter, carrying a divine bow in his hand. He was born to terminate द्रोणाचार्य. From the flames of that Holy Alter one very beautiful lady was also emerged named as कृष्णा.

Later on she became famous with the name of द्रौपदी. Time elapsed and see the irony that धृष्टद्युम्न got his education from द्रोणाचार्य himself. It is also believed that Eklavya was killed in the battle of Rukmini Haran by Shri Krishna and he was reborn as धृष्टद्युम्न. धृष्टद्युम्न chopped the head of द्रोणाचार्य on 14th day of the war of Mahabharata, when he was in a state of grief due to a false news of the death of his son Ashwatthama. He sat down, abandoned the arms and succumbed to deep sorrow.
So, while दुर्योधन was telling द्रोणाचार्य that this army was arrayed by the son of द्रुपद, धृष्टद्युम्न, his intention was to enrage द्रोणाचार्य with the feeling that this धृष्टद्युम्न was brought to earth to extinguish him. दुर्योधन wanted to refresh the humiliation and enmity of द्रोणाचार्य with Durpada, so that he would fight the war with his full valor and anger.
