Duryodhana was explaining about the warriors of Pandavas and Kayravas. Thereafter he said - This army of ours, which is fully protected by BHISHMA, is unconquerable; while that army of theirs, guarded in every way by BHIMA, is easy to conquer. Therefore, stationed in your respective positions on all fronts, do you all guard BHISHMA in particular, on all sides.

Here DURYODHANA showed his faith on the might of KAURAVA warriors, such as, BHISHMA PITAMAHA and DRONACHARYA. He thought that BHISHMA was a experienced Commander and the strength of KAURAVA army in his command, is abundant. There is some description, about the numbers of Armies, in Verse 13 and 27 of Chapter 19 of UDYOGA PARVA, in MAHABHARATA:-
Seven AKSHAUHINI armies were assembled from here and there, in favor of Pandavas, which were appearing as, filled with many kinds of flags. In the same way, Eleven AKSHAUHINI armies were assembled in favor of Duryodhan, which were decorated with many varieties of flags. And they were eager to fight with the sons of Kunti.

KAURAVA army was comprised of 11 AKSHAUHINI warriors, out of these, 2 Lac 40 Thousand 570 Chariots, 2 Lac 40 Thousand 570 Elephants, 7 Lac 21 Thousand 710 Horses, 12 Lac 02 Thousand 850 Infantry, Total 24 Lac 05 Thousand 700 warriors. This was a huge army and anyone could depend on its might. The Generals of this army were experienced and proficient warriors in warfare, like KRIPACHARYA, DRONACHARYA, SHALYA, JAYADRATH, SUDAKSHIN, KRIT VARMA, ASHWATTHAMA, KARNA, BHURISHRAVA, SHAKUNI AND BAHLIK. If DURYODHANA had confidence in the victory of this Army, it was fully justified.

The army of PANDAVAS was comprised of 7 AKSHAUHINI warriors, out of these, 1 Lac 53 Thousand 090 Chariots, 1 Lac 53 Thousand 090 Elephants, 4 Lac 49 Thousand 270 Horses, 7 Lac 65 Thousand 450 Infantry, Total 15 Lac 20 Thousand 900 warriors. Compared to KAURAVAS, this was a small army. The Generals of PANDAVA army were less experienced, such as DRUPADA, VIRATA, SATYAKI, DHRISHTADYUMNA, CHEKITAN, SHIKHANDI AND BHIMASENA. Overall protection of the PANDAVA army was also in the hands of less experienced BHIMA. There was no comparison of BHIMA and BHISHMA in military skills.

DURYODHANA was confident of his victory, as long as BHISHMA PITAMAHA was with him, because PITAMAHA BHISHMA was an outstanding Commander and unparalleled Warrior. It was therefore, he advised DRONACHARYA that, all Generals should stay firmly in their embattlements, and protect BHISHMA PITAMAHA only, from all sides.

Incidentally, we should know something about military formations, known as VYOOHA, used in MAHABHARATA war. This warfare spread over a period of 18 days. The most talked about military formation was, CHAKRAVYOOHA, wherein KAURAVA warriors killed the son of ARJUNA, ABHIMANYU collectively, against the ethics of the warfare. During the entire war of 18 days, 36 VYOOHAS were formed, two VYOOHAS per day, which were unique in formation and very difficult to break. Kauravas formed 18 VYOOHAS as well as Pandavas arrayed equal number of VYOOHAS to counter them.
