Here, श्रीकृष्ण is addressed with two names, माधव and हृषीकेश. Let’s analyze these names. There lived a King named मधु in Yadava dynasty. Grandson of Madhu was वृष्णि. He was also a great king. One branch of Yadava dynasty was known by the name of वृष्णि. From fifth generation of King वृष्णि श्रीकृष्ण was born in this linage. Therefore श्रीकृष्ण is known as माधव also. हृषीक means senses. One who has total control over his senses is known as हृषीकेश. श्रीकृष्ण was known as हृषीकेश due to his total control over his senses.
श्रीकृष्ण blew a conch named पाञ्चजन्य in the beginning of the war. This conch has its own story. श्रीकृष्ण and his elder brother बलराम was studying in the hermitage of sage संदीपनि. When they graduated, they insisted their teacher to accept गुरु दक्षिणा. Sage संदीपनि knew that these lads are AVATARs. Therefore, he asked for his dead son, drowned in the sea, as Guru Dakshina. श्रीकृष्ण and बलराम approached the sea. There, they saw a marine demon known as पंचजन, who was dwelling in a conch shell. They killed the demon during a fierce fight and captured the celestial conch. But the son of the teacher was not there. So, श्रीकृष्ण and बलराम went to the township of the God of death, यमराज and blew this celestial conch. यमराज, handed over the son of their teacher to the brothers. Thus, बलराम and श्रीकृष्ण gave Guru Dakshina. Sage संदीपनि was greatly pleased and told श्रीकृष्ण that this celestial conch पान्चजन्य was specially made for him, hence, he should keep it. Thus श्रीकृष्ण got पान्चजन्य conch. श्रीकृष्ण blew this पान्चजन्य conch, at the outset of महाभारत war.
Here, अर्जुन was called as “धनञ्जय”. अर्जुन himself elaborated the meaning of this name to the son of king विराट, उत्तर कुमार, when he was dwelling in the palace of the King. Let’s listen this episode also.
Once upon a time अर्जुन approached इन्द्रपुरी, near his father God Indra, for fun visit. A fairy उर्वशी, infatuated with अर्जुन.But Arjun did not respond according to her wish, hence she got angry and cursed him to be eunuch for one year. When पांडव lost everything in gamble, they have to go through one year’s hiding, along with, 12 years’ exile in forest. This hiding period was observed by Pandavas in विराट नगर. There, in विराट नगर, पांडव lived with their false names and false identities. They passed one year of hiding by working in the palace of king विराट, as servants. Arjuna was known as 'षण्ढक' and 'बृहन्नला' during the one year duration of hiding. There, Arjuna taught, dance lessons to princess Uttara, who was the daughter of king Virata. Later on she was married to his son Abhimanyu.
दुर्योधन had information from his spies, that पांडव were hiding in विराट नगर. He immediately sent a troop to attack विराट नगर. King विराट got perturbed. At that time वृहन्नला carried prince Uttar Kumar in chariot and told him that he himself was महारथी अर्जुन. उत्तर कुमार did not believe it. Here अर्जुन told that he was known as धनञ्जय, as he had conquered many kingdoms and their enormous wealth.
During the exile, अर्जुन prayed इन्द्र, वरुण and other gods. वरुण देव, gifted him a celestial conch known as देवदत्त. This देवदत्त conch was blown by अर्जुन in the beginning of the महाभारत war.
भीम blew a huge conch named पौण्ड्र. Likewise, king युधिष्ठिर blew a conch named अनन्तविजय, and youngest of all Pandavas, नकुल and सहदेव, blew conches, known as सुघोष and मणिपुष्पक. Other warriors of Pandava army, such as, कशिराज, शिखंडी, धृष्ट द्युम्न, विराट, सात्यकि, द्रुपद, प्रतिविन्ध्य, सुतसोम, श्रुतकर्मा, शतानीक, श्रुतसेन and अभिमन्यु also, blew their respective conches. This collective sound of conches emerged into a dreadful roar, which trembled the hearts of the enemies. This turbulent sound, echoed from earth till sky.
