Some queries arose in last Episode. Why Kurukshetra was chosen as war-field? Let us find out. Many stories are told. But one of them is really shocking. Shri Krishna sent many messengers in every direction to find facts about strange places. One messenger returned and told an awful tale. “At Kurukshetra, a man asked his younger brother to repair the broken ridge of his farm, from which rainwater was draining out. The younger brother instantly refused. The man went furious on his denial. He stabbed his younger brother to death and dragged him to the broken ridge by holding his legs. There he threw his dead body over the broken ridge to stop rainwater from the farm. Hearing this awful story, Shri Krishna decided that such a place is most suitable for a war between brothers.
Other question was- why King Dhritrashtra termed Kurukshetra as Holy Field? Let us peep into the history. Previously Kurukshetra was known as Holy Alter of Lord Brahma. Later on sage Parashuram killed Kshatriyas in this place to avenge the killing of his father and filled five pits with their blood. Time elapsed and these five pits of blood were transformed into holy pools and this place was named as Samanta Panchaka. Later on son of Samvaran – King Kuru ploughed 7 KOS of this area with a gold plough. Hence, This area was called Kurukshetra. It was also center of Vedic Culture. That’s why, it was considered as Holy Field. Now, come to the 2nd Verse of Gita. When King Dhritrashtra asked, Sanjay started narrating the incidents of war. Sanjay said:-
“दृष्ट्वा तु पाण्डवानीकं व्यूढं दुर्योधनस्तदा ।
आचार्यमुपसङ्गम्य राजा वचनमब्रवीत् ।।२।।
At that time, seeing the army of Pandavas drawn up for battle and approaching Dronacharya, King Duryodhana spoke these words.“

What did Duryodhan said, that we will hear in next Episode. Now, we try to know about Duryodhana and Dronacharya. Duryodhan was the Supreme Commander of Kaurav Army. He was eldest of 100 sons of King Dhritrashtra and Queen Gandhari. It happened like this. When Kunti gave birth to his first son, Gandhari fell in depression thinking that now his son can’t claim the throne of Hastinapur. With this thought, Gandhari hurt her womb which resulted in miscarriage. Then Sage Ved Vyas came and divided the miscarried fetus into 101 parts and put them in 101 pitchers filled with cow fat. Time passed and 100 kauravas took birth from these pitchers. One who was born from first pitcher was named as Duryodhan.
Now something about Dronacharya. Dronacharya was the son of Sage Bharadwaj and fairy Ghritarchy. He was disciple of Sage Parashuram. In Hastinapur, he was teacher of 100 sons of King Dhritrashtra and 5 sons of Pandu. It is relevant here to know about Eklavya. Eklavya was a tribal lad. He wanted to learn archery from Dronacharya but Dronacharya refused. Then Eklavya started practicing archery imagining Dronacharya as his teacher. By hard practice he emerged as outstanding archer, even better than Dronacharya’s best disciple Arjuna. One Day Dronacharya approached Eklavya and said- “If you consider me as your teacher, give me fee of my choice.” Eklavya agreed at once. Dronacharya asked Eklavya to give his right hand thumb as fee. Eklavya instantly chopped off his right hand thumb and offered it to Dronacharya. In war of Mahabharata, Dronacharya was fighting from the side of Kauravas.
Now we rest our story. Why Duryodhana approached Acharya Drona? What was the strength of Pandava Army? What is Vyuha? We will explore these queries in next episode. Till then, Good bye and please take care of yourself. Thank you !!!
