Today, we find out that which musical instruments were played for declaring Mahabharata war. Sanjaya told this, in the story of war, to King Dhritarashtra :-

The grand old man of the Kaurava race, their glorious granduncle BHISHMA, cheering up DURYODHANA, roared terribly, like a lion and blew his conch. Then Conches, Kettledrums, Tabors, Drums and Horns, suddenly blared forth and the noise was tumultuous.

Here Sanjaya told that Pitamaha Bhishma roared like a lion. And he announced the beginning of the war, blowing a Conch. This pleased Duryodhana very much. Thereafter, warriors played different kinds of war music, and this produced a horrible sound. Sanjaya referred many musical instruments here, which were played before the beginning of Mahabharat war, to fire the warriors and soldiers with enthusiasm. Let’s know about those instruments, one by one.
In बृह्म वैवर्त पुराण, a story was told about origin of Conches. Lord Shiva hurled his Trident with intention to kill demons. All the demons were burned to ashes immediately. The ashes were scattered over the sea and transformed into Conches. Conch was also believed to be the brother of Goddess लक्ष्मी, because both were born from sea. Scientifically, Conch is a marine animal of Strombidae family, having hard shell. A loud sound is generated by blowing through its shell. Therefore, Conch is blown like a musical instrument to please gods in Hindu rituals. In olden days, Chief Commander of army, used to blow Conch to pronounce the beginning of war, followed by other warriors. Almost all soldiers had their own Conch. Let’s listen the sound of Conch.

भेरी or kettle drum is a percussion instrument. This drum is made, in the shape of huge bowl, covered on top open end by animal skin. It generates a horrible sound by beating the skin with wooden or metal sticks, which fires the fighting spirit of the warriors and soldiers. Kettle drum beaters used to beat these instruments tied on the back of elephants, and generate musical sounds out of them. The soldiers got inspired with this sound. We should hear the sound of BHERI to feel it.

पणवानक is also a percussion instrument but it is not as big as BHERI. As such it can be played in solo or in pair by tying with the belly or hanging in the neck. Being small insize, musical notes and sounds can be generated by these drums, which inflame the passion of battle, in soldiers and warriors. पणवानक beaters usually walked on foot with the infantry. Let’s hear the passionate sound of पणवानक.

This is a very good video, though I will suggest to change the heading. It has a lot of information about different kinds of instruments with its uses and unique features. But per the heading it seems like a story narration. Overall, I enjoyed learning about the different war instruments.
